Santa Clara Sporting '98 Boys Black Team Raise Over $2k for Goals for a Cure; Sporting Club has raised over $55k in 3 Years

The Santa Clara Sporting 98 Boys Black Team led the charge this year and raised $2,054 during the month of October during the annual 2010 Goals for a Cure Campaign. Twenty of the Sporting Teams worked to raise money, and the club raised a total of $15,051 in 2010. Santa Clara Sporting has now raised more than $55,000 between 2008-2010 to fight breast cancer!

Sporting Flew Goals for a Cure at Brandi's Game

Over 100 soccer players from Santa Clara Sporting attended the Brandi Chastain Testimonial game yesterday. The event was a celebration for Brandi as she retired from soccer, and some of her 1999 World Cup soccer teammates showed-up at Buck Shaw Stadium to support her. Check-out the photos. Mammo Marathon at El Camino Hospital - April 9th-10th

El Camino Hospital announced their Two-Day Mammo Marathon to be held April 9th-10th at their new Los Gatos location. El Camino Hospital Los Gatos is offering mammograms at no charge, and the Santa Clara Sporting Club helped raise over $46,000 during the last two years during their Goals for a Cure Campaign to provide funds for the community service activity.

OUR NEW DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY UNIT IS NOW OPEN.

To mark this special occasion and to promote women’s health, El Camino Hospital Los Gatos is offering mammograms at no charge. That’s because we believe so strongly that a combination of regular breast screenings and self exams are one of the best ways that women can safeguard their health and their future.

Additional funding is provided by The Women’s Hospital at El Camino Hospital, Imaging Services at El Camino Hospital and Silicon Valley Diagnostic Imaging group.

Goals for a Cure Donation Ceremony

The Santa Clara Sporting Club donated $20,000 tonight to the El Camino Hospital Foundation to provide free mammograms to women who need financial support to receive breast screening exams. Lindsay Greensweig, Interim President of the El Camino Hospital Foundation attended the event to receive the check from Santa Clara Sporting. Dr. Patricia Rogers from El Camino Hospital was also on hand; she came-up with the recommendation to use the donation funds to provide early breast screening exams. Most donations raised to fight breast cancer are typically used for cancer research, so providing the funds to women for early breast screening exams provides an impactful contribution to fight breast cancer at a local community level. Early detection of breast cancer is one of the most important ways to battle the disease.

The Santa Clara Sporting '93 Girls White Team led by Team Manager Cynthia Bates-Brown, Head Coach Jim Goularte, Assistant Coach John DeJesus, and team mom and breast cancer survivor Tracy Aguilar were also on-hand with most of their team. Their team raised $3,516 of the $20,000 last October!

Santa Clara Sporting Board Member Abel Azevedo and Sebastain Goncalves hosted the event and thanked everyone for their support. Sporting has now raised and donated over $46,000 during the past two years! More photos are online at our Flickr gallery.

$20,000 Raised in 2009 for GFaC

The Santa Clara Sporting Club is proud to announce that the club raised $20,000 last October during their 2009 Goals-for-a-Cure Campaign. Special recognition goes out to the Santa Clara Sporting ’93 Girls White Team led by Jim Goularte and Cynthia Bates-Brown which raised $3,516 to fight breast cancer. Traci Aguilar, a breast cancer survivior is also a lightning rod in the team helping with endless hours of love and support. This year the team came-up with yet another innovative idea; a shaved ice machine they ran at many soccer games and tournaments.

Santa Clara Sporting Club launched Goals-for-a-Cure during the month of October 2008 to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer. In 2008, the club raised $26,537 for the cause. The funds raised were used to support women who need financial assistance to get a breast screen exam at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. Sporting '97G White Team Raise $1,000 in Juggle-A-Thon

On October 22nd, the Sporting White '97 (U12) girl’s team held their first “Juggle-A-Thon”. Each girl recorded their personal juggling goal that they wanted to attain. Friends, neighbors, and family members sponsored each girl with a price per juggle or a flat rate.

During the event, Soccer Mom’s and Dad’s were on hand to count each girl’s juggles. The girls as a team were determined to do well since they knew that the money they raised was going to an excellent cause.

Parents donated prizes and each girl received a beautiful custom participation certificate along with a prize. There were over 2,145 total combined team juggles and the girls raised more than $ 1,000.00.

On October 31st, the Sporting 00B Green Team had it's final fundraising pitch for Goals for a Cure. The team raffled off their GFAC basket the families created together. Michelle Staples was our lucky winner. Michelle saw our post on the Goals for a Cure website and purchased her tickets. Thank you Michelle for supporting Goals for a Cure and congratulations on winning our basket!

In addition to raffling off our GFAC basket, on Halloween Day the team sold churros, funnel cakes and snow cones to raise money for Goals for a Cure. The Santa Clara Sporting '00Boys Green Team competed at the Halloween Kick or Treat Tournament last weekend. More action photos are online

Sporting '97G Green Team Win Clovis Cup & Score 25 More Goals for GFaC

Congratulations to the Santa Clara Sporting '97 Girls Green Team for winning the 2009 Clovis Challenge Cup. This is the teams' third consecutive championship. The girls went undefeated in their bracket taking on some of Central California's best teams. They beat the local favorites, Bullard FC (4-0) and California Odyssey (6-0) to advance to the semi-finals against a tough SVU team. The Sporting girls prevailed and advanced to the finals with a 3-0 shutout! In the finals the Sporting girls met up with the fifth ranked team in NorCal, the EDYSL Konfusion. The Sporting girls got out to an early lead and never looked back. The matched ended in a 6-0 Sporting win and the girls were crowned the 2009 Clovis Challenge Cup Champions!

The team scored 25 goals over the weekend and have accumulated 51 goals this month for GFaC. One more weekend!

Sporting '93 Girls Team Mom, Tracy Aguilar has been out every weekend with the girls selling shaved ice and GFaC merchandise every weekend to help raise GFaC funds and raise awareness about breast cancer. Tracy is a breast cancer survivor and is writting a book to share her experience. Thanks Tracy!

Many thanks to the Sporting girls who devoted time to support the younger SCYSL U8 soccer players and serve as role models. You can see in the photos that everybody had a lot of fun!

Rock on, Sporting folks. We reached one lady this weekend which made all of our efforts worth while. She has a good friend fighting cancer right now. They had just rescheduled her birthday celebration to a day when she was feeling up to it. This friend was so touched by our efforts to bring awareness to breast cancer (and other types of cancer) as well as to raise money for Goals for a Cure. This is a very good and important thing we are doing!

Sporting Teams Add 122 Goals in Week #2; Total at 276 After Two Weeks

Twenty-one Santa Clara Sporting Teams scored a total of 122 goals last weekend to drive-up the total number of goals scored to 276 after the first two weekends in October. The Santa Clara Sporting 93 Girls Green Team and Sporting 94 Boys led the pack with 14 goals each over the weekend. The club is only 42 goals shy of matching last year's final count of 318 goals.

The Sporting '93 Girls white team scored 9 goals in 3 games to place as the highest point team in the Championship game at District II Cup this weekend. After a 1-1 tie in regulation, and two overtime periods with no goals, it came down to a penalty kick shootout. In addition to the great performance in the District II Cup, the Sporting '93 Parents and Players raised over $800 dollars this weekend kicking off this years "Goals For A Cure" month.

Locks of Love a Stylin' Success

In conjunction with “Goals for a Cure” and Cancer Awareness Month, Caroline Cuevas (SC Sporting ’96 Boys Team Manager) organized a Hair Donation drive to benefit Locks of Love - a company that makes wigs for children with cancer. Caroline's daughter and some of her Sporting teammates donated their hair for the cause. Caroline was brilliant enough to secure some corporate sponsorship to donate money for every inch of hair the girls donated. Check-out more photos at the GFaC Flickr website.

Antiana is having a blast with her new hair length. She brushes it all day long and changes headbands about every 5 minutes. She wants to do this event again, she said “I want my hair to grow fast, so I can donate another pony tail." Hair Donors: Antiana Cuevas donated 14", Lorena Namowicz donated 13", Dani Wheeler donated 10", Jessica Rios (adult) donated 11", Eloisa Valdiosera donated 24", and Lucy Velez donated 10"!

The "Locks for Love" Hair Donation drive was held at The Upper Cut Salon in Sunnyvale on November 2nd. The girls donated a total of 82 inches of hair, and Paychex Payroll Services donated two hundred dollars to Goals-for-a-Cure in honor of the hair drive! All the hair will be donated to Locks of Love.

BIG THANKS to our hairdresser Maritza Valdiosera she donated 4 hours into this event to cut & style “the new do” for all the donors. Special thanks to our adult donor Jessica Rios for braving it out and goind real short to donate 11”.

This was a super special event for 9 year old Sporting player, Dani Wheeler, her grandmother Cora Salom is a cancer survivor, and she recently lost 2 uncles to cancer. Dani cut her hair real short to give up the minimum of 10" and she looks darling!!! Way to go girl!!

We are so thankful for our friends that stopped by to show their support : The Ballard Family, The Saeger Family, The Fagundez Family, Garren Quibelan & Family, America Meza, Alea Maldonado, Eva Vasquez, Kathryn Cuevas, Kelly Namowicz, Christy Kinney and Suzy Paluzzi.

Inaugural GFaC Comes to a Close

Dear Friends:

Our “Goals for a Cure” campaign is coming to an end. Tomorrow (October 31, 2008) is the last day to wear the pink jerseys.

Personally and as President of this club, I would like to thank the Santa Clara Sporting Board of Directors for the generous donation in the amount of $5,000 to get this wonderful campaign started.

I would also like to thank Matteo Studios for donating all the printing necessary for this campaign and for the numerous hours of hard work. I really appreciate your time and effort dedicated to “Goals for a Cure” and we are all very proud to have you as our partner in this event.

My deepest appreciation goes to all the coaches, assistant coaches, managers, parents and players for a splendid and enthusiastic participation in our “Goals for a Cure” campaign.

A special thanks to Gabe Foo for creating the “Goals for a Cure” blog and keeping everyone informed and thrilled about this event.

For those of you, interested in purchasing the pink jerseys, I would like to inform you that they are $20 each and that this money will count towards your fundraising. If you decide not to purchase the jersey, please return it to the club no later than November 10, 2008 along with the funds raised. All checks should be made payable to Santa Clara Sporting Club. Once we have received all the funds, a check will be issued to El Camino Hospital for free breast cancer screening.

Finally, I would like to recognize Keven Azevedo, Jason Azevedo and Matt Olson for having the brilliant “Goals for a Cure” idea and for choosing Santa Clara Sporting as their partner.

89 Goals Last Weekend - Club Finishes with 318 Goals!

The Sporting 98, 97 & 95 Girls Teams success on a weekend filled with tournaments gave the club a strong finish during the last GFaC weekend! Our club scored 89 goals last weekend and finished the month playing for a cure and scoring a total of 318 goals! Congratulations everyone!

Don't forget about the Locks for Love event on Sunday at 4:30pm at The Upper Cut, and the GFaC Coaches Game at 6:15pm at Buckshaw Stadium.

GFaC Coaches Game Nov. 2nd

Coaches/Mangers, we have finalized the time and location for the Goals-For-a-Cure coaches game. It will be held at Santa Clara University behind Buckshaw Stadium on the turf field Sunday Nov. 2. The game will start at 6:15 pm and should be a very fun event. We need to get the teams set-up and conformation from all the players involved. Each player will be placed on a team and receive a free Goals For a Cure T-shirt jersey. All of your players and their families are invited, along with anyone who wishes to come. We are hoping to make this a fun event to wrap up what has been a very memorable month. The game will consist of 2- 30 minute halves. Sporting U11 & U13 Girls Win Championships in Clovis & Score 21 Goals

The Sporting U11 and U13 girls dug deep in Clovis to bring home two Championship Cups!!! The U11 and U13 girls both went undefeated into the finals. The U11 girls had 9 goals for and 2 against for the tournament. They beat LG Elite in the Finals 2-0. The U13 girls had 12 goals for and 1 against for the tournament. They beat Manteca Arsenal in the finals 2 -1.

Caroline Cuevas has organzied a "Locks of Love" event for Sunday at 4:30pm at the Upper Cut Salon, 260 S.Sunnyvale Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94086 (near Sunnyvale Town Center).

If you plan to donate your locks, please contact Caroline first as there is a donor form to be completed. She also needs to track how many inches of hair will be donated - so that her corporate sponsor knows how much to pay-up. Her sponsor is matching $1 per inch that we collect; all will go to benefit "GFAC!"

My name is Sharon. I am a friend of Amy's and a fellow kick-boxer with her. Last February I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I went through surgery and then 4 months of chemotherapy and 2 months of radiation. My treatments were finished on August 6th. I am GREAT now and the cancer is gone; I was very lucky that it was caught early and it was curable! I am someone who benefited from all of the money raised towards breast cancer. Because of all of the money, research is being done constantly to help battle this horrible disease. By wearing the pink jerseys all of this month, you are helping people to be aware of breast cancer and you are probably even motivating people to donate money to the cause. I am so grateful to all of you for what you have to done to help save my life. It was the scariest thing I have ever gone through in my life and I'm so glad to be able to say that I am going to be around to watch my three children grow-up!!

We have a great response to GFaC! With 9 families turning in their pledges, we have secured in donations, pledges, and bracelet money a total of $1,205! We also have an additional commitment of $22 per goal when we score over the next four games. I would like to recognize Tyler, who brought in $376 so far in pledges and donations. When Nico went to the neighborhood in his pink jersey asking for neighbors to sponsor him, he heard of a remarkable story how somebody was affected by breast cancer. Sporting Does its Part to Fight Breast Cancer One Community at a Time!

It is a joy to see a community pull together to support such a wonderful cause. Twelve years ago this month I was given six months to live. With a 6 month old baby, 2 year old and 4 year old it was a devastating diagnosis. After many procedures including two stem cell transplants, I am a testament to the fact that every little bit helps. As a survivor I am thankful to all of you and your efforts. Research needs to continue and early detection is the best weapon for women today. If we continue to fight this disease one community at time, surely we will see a cure.

A Very Special Goals-For-A-Cure Trophy

The Sporting '94 Boys won the 2008 District Cup last weekend, and three team parents surprised the boys by converting a plain trophy into a one-of-a-kind custom Goals-For-a-Cure trophy to mark the inauggrual year of this event. Don Lazzarini painted-on the pink jersey and black shorts black, then Mike Pierce carefully scripted the Santa Clara Sporting logo on the chest of the jersey, and finally, Cassie Escobar shrank and printed the Sporting logo then glued it to the uniform. You can click on the photo to see a larger image and all the details...they even got the Goals-for-a-cure logo on the jersey too. Talk about a team effort! This is certainly going to be a memorable trophy sitting in the Sporting Trophy Case :-)

Innovative GFaC Ideas from the Sporting '97 Girls Green Team

The Sporting '97 (U11) Girls Green Team have some innovative ideas to promote Goals-For-a-Cure. Here is a letter they email to game opponents before each game to explain GFaC and gain the other team's support before each game.

Dear Coach _______________________,

Santa Clara Sporting has joined with Matteo Studios and El Camino Hospital during the month of October to raise awareness for breast cancer as well as to raise money for mammograms for women who could not otherwise afford one. All money we raise during the month of October will go to Goals For A Cure. Check out our website at http://www.goalsforacure.com/.

Because one of our players lost her mother to cancer last year and another mother is fighting cancer today, we know how devastating cancer can be. We are doing our best to raise money to help others learn about and have access to early breast cancer detection.

If you and your team would like to join us in our efforts to raise money, we would be very grateful. We have planned several fundraising activities that we use throughout the month of October. All money will be donated to Goals for a Cure.

- We will pass around a money "shaker" each time a goal is scored. Participants can add a few coins to the shaker which will build throughout the month.

- We will sell soccer ball pins with pink ribbons. Cost is $3 each or 2 pins for $5.

- We will sell raffle tickets for a chance to win a pink soccer ball signed by Brandi Chastain. Tickets will be sold for 50 cents each or 3 for $1.

If you have loved ones who have been touched by cancer, you can add a ribbon in their memory to our Goals for a Cure soccer banner. There is no cost for this. We want to play all of our games in memory of and in honor of those who have lost their battle with cancer and for those who have battled the disease.

Sporting 93 Girls Playing in Pink for a Cure!

It was a wet, ankle-deep muddy field at the District 2 Cup last weekend, but that didn't keep Jim Goularte's SC Sporting 93G girls down! The girls played hard-fought games and lost the consolation match after a 0-0 regulation game, 2 OT's, and was finally decided in PK's!! We passed our Goals for a Cure jug and we are now at over $170 in donations with our 4 tournament regulation goals and a PK goal (and we're just beginning!).

Breast cancer has touched our team families and friends, and we are Playing for the Pink and Playing for a Cure! Stay tuned as we continue our fundraising efforts to hit our $1,000 goal!!! - CB2

Sporting '90 Boys Win District Cup

The Sporting '90 Boys Team finished Saturday's bracket play needing a perfect game on Sunday morning against the very strong South San Jose Clash. They were up to the challenge on Sunday, and played the SSJ Clash to a 4-0 win; picked-up a perfect 10 points to place then into the afternoon championship game. The team showed everyone at the Morgan Hill fields that real men do wear pink! They were victorious over another very strong Seaside Session's Team by a score of 2-1. This is the second weekend in a row that the boys have been tournament champions.

Sporting '93 & '94 Boys Win District Cup & '90 Girls Take 3rd Place

The Santa Clara Sporting '93 & '94 Boys Teams both won the District Cup Championship, while the '90 Girls Team finished 3rd last weekend at the tournament.

All the SC Sporting Teams debut their new pink "Goals-For-a-Cure" pink colored jerseys. The entire Sporting Club is raising money and awareness to fight breast cancer during the month of October.

The Sporting '94 Boys defeated the Palo Alto '94 Team in a tough 1-0 battle to win their championship game. The '94s went undefeated in the three games leading to the championship matcha and did not allow any goals into their net. They scored 5 goals to contribute to the cause!

The Sporting '90 Girls Team finished in 3rd Place overall in the U18 Women's bracket. Congratulations to all the players and coaches!
